October 20, 2000Waiting for trial information.......I'm trying to get in on trials for stem cell research, probably with Washington University St. Louis. They're waiting for the studies to be approved by the Government and for Government funding. Per person it comes to $100,000 (which blows my mind), lodging for approximately 2 weeks of the 3 weeks is on the patient. I'm not sure of all the details. I may not be accepted for ANY trials because of the EDSS limits. It seems the Government has set the criteria for the EDSS from 5 to 8 1/2. I'm probably considered to be 9, which leaves me out. I talked with Linda Schultz at Washington University, Dr. McDonald's nurse. McDonald wants to use externally disabled MSers but if that prevents funding than I'm out the window. I have talked with 3 universities, all have said the same...This is going to be the criteria with ALL STUDIES. The only difference is that Linda Schultz thinks I may be included because of McDonald's preference. But our On the ball Government has the last say. If the EDSS criteria 5 to 8 1/2 is the only way that they'll get funding than I think McDonald will fold and go with the program. I'd like to think that he'd stick to his desires but that's not reality! Or is that my little negative self popping up. Either way I have to wait. Since this is going to be a waiting game with me, I suggest you all keep Christopher Reeves website handy Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation And the NMSS (surprised I'm saying that!) They are supporting this research! I say supporting, I don't know if that's financially or just words. Another service to subscribe to is FREE Stem Cell News Bulletins via E-mail! It's a free email service for stem cell news. I was hoping to have been using my arms before I turned 50 but that past me up Oct. 1st! So maybe during this 50th year it will happen! Things are definitely getting close to a reality, my reality! Smile |
