June 29, 2000Cell Transplant Trials...I'm trying to get into the studies (I think studies!) at Washington Medical University in St. Louis, Missouri John W. McDonald, MD PhD I'm waiting for Dr. McDonald's nurse to send me information, which I'm too look at than make contact with them. I don't have the details of what's needed, just what the treatment is. The years they have been doing cell transplant studies, which is since the '60s! Brings me to think of mitoxantrone, which was studied starting in the '80s. These studies drag out entirely too long. Someone jogging or playing tennis may not think so but to the millions that can benefit... it's a different opinion. The delays this time aren't necessarily a money hangup but a moral issue (for many) causing the money hangup. Legitimate "Harvesting" of fetuses shouldn't stand in the way of millions being helped. The scope of this research is REMARKABLE. Neurological, Cardiovascular, various Cancers and Childhood Diabetes are just a few conditions that can be treated if not cured. Using the word "Cured" is foreign to my mind, something that isn't easily accepted. But I'm willing to take another chance! I NEED to take another chance. This is a simple short explanation of stem cell transplant from Stem Cell Main "There already exists evidence from animal studies that stem cells can be made to differentiate into cells of choice, and that these cells will act properly in their transplanted environment. In human beings, transplants of hematopoietic stem cells (the cells which eventually produce blood) following treatments for cancer, for example, have been done for years now. Further, somewhat cruder experiments (e.g., the transplantation of fetal tissue into the brains of Parkinson's patients) indicate that the expectation that stem cell therapies could provide robust treatments for many human diseases is a reasonable one. It is only through controlled scientific research that the true promise will be understood." I don't think it will be long before this treatment is available without too much difficulty. Of course there's always going to be Insurance Companies not wanting to foot the bill but IF this treatment proves itself correct, NOTHING will stop MSers and others with devastating and potentially devastating diseases from getting treatment. Don't forget to write your congressman U.S. Senate and especially Senator Arlen Specter: Senator Arlen Specter |
