July 12, 1999New Studies Information...(Elaine Delack)Here's their response to inquiries about their treatment/study: Thank you for your interest in the EDMS research project with multiple sclerosis. This letter is in response to your request for information regarding Elaine DeLacks personal experience with the compounded prescription, referred to as the "Procarin" prescription, and the results of the feasibility study conducted by Dr. Daniel Nehls in Tacoma, Washington. Elaine DeLack reports that she has been able to control her symptoms for the past two and a half years using the Procarin prescription. She reports no adverse side effects from the medication. EDMS funded a 90 day feasibility study of 10 MS patients having a baseline score of 5.0 - 7.5 on the Expanded Disability Status Scale. Eighty percent of the patients were female. The patients were between 38 - 75 years of age and had 4 - 35 years of disease length since diagnosis. All patients diagnosis of MS had been confirmed via a MRI. The study was approved by the Western Institutional Review Board. Eight of the ten patients (1 male, 7 females) reported improvement in bladder function, balance, coordination, speech, strength in extremities, ambulation, cognition, and fatigue. These improvements were reported at the 45 day testing point and continued through the 90 testing date. Six of the eight patients who reported improvement during the study using Procarin reported a return of their symptoms as early as 36 hours after being off the medication. These six patients opted to resume the Procarin medication and report that their symptoms again improved within 12 - 36 hours after resuming the medication. None of the study patients reported any adverse side effects to the medication. The study will be published in the near future in medical journals. The following is a list of doctors who are familiar with the research literature regarding Procarin. Several doctors in the area are currently prescribing Procarin to some of their MS patients.
Procarin is currently available in a transdermal patch which is changed twice a day. Procarin will be available in the near future in an injectable form. Currently the cost of Procarin is $149.00 - $249.00 per month depending upon your doctors prescription and is available at Key Pharmacy in Kent, WA (1-800-878-1322 ) by prescription.Procarin consists of compounded medications which are approved for human use, but not approved by the FDA for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. The use of Procarin is contraindicated in persons having asthma. EDMS plans to continue further clinical studies of a larger test population to obtain more data as to the effectiveness of Procarin as a potential treatment in multiple sclerosis. If you would like information regarding participation in clinical studies, please call (360) 654-0448. EDMS, LLC.
