Another antibiotic study...

Vanderbilt University has done a small study and planning for another study using antibiotic.

here's a few quotes, April 23, 1999...
"Previously, researchers have looked at a virus as the infectious agent that may cause MS. That has never panned out," Sriram said. "The clinical and pathologic presentation is one of a chronic infection. That's why we come back to an infectious cause over and over again."

The new theory is that Chlamydia, a relatively newly discovered organism, may act as a trigger toward the development of MS, Sriram said.
"We explored this in this one gentleman and were successful in culturing the organism," Sriram said. "He subsequently made a fairly dramatic recovery from his MS with long-term antibiotic therapy."
"Since MS is known for its spontaneous remissions it is difficult to conclude in one patient that the antibiotics he received was responsible for his recovery. However, in his case, the improvement was so dramatic that we decided to explore the issue further."

I'm leaning (not because I'm falling from my chair!) towards this treatment more, now that there's ANOTHER "Reputable" source. The National MS Society gave Vanderbilt a grant 2 years ago! (why don't our doctors know this stuff) Their next step (as slow as it is) is to start a 3 year study.

I hope they consider using chronic progressive MSers. If they would they wouldn't have that "Spontaneous remission" to scratch their heads about. As I've said, if I start moving my fingers, it's the treatment not a remission.

I've written Dr. Sriram to find out about volunteers, his email is <srirams@ctrvax.vanderbilt.edu>. By being a volunteer, most if not all treatments, blood tests and followups would hopefully be paid for. If there's not a fairly quick reply I'll go with Texas A&M anyway. I should be hearing from Lindner with the cultures and protocol within a few weeks.

Now, there's 2 universities, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt University doing studies, LifeCare making a business and here's UC San Francisco's opinion.

UCSF saysMight the environmental factor be a viral infection? Certain viruses may cause demyelination in the brain and spinal cord of humans and animals. However, the clinical pattern of disease following such infections is not identical to MS. Also, viral proteins have not been reliably isolated from MS brains. In the absence of reliable isolation of infectious material from the brains of patients with MS, the relationship between MS and viruses, such as human herpes virus-6, or other infectious agents, such as chlamydia, remains uncertain.

Nonetheless, it remains possible that viral infections may trigger attacks of MS even if they do not actually cause the disease I can't find the website this is from, (I got it off the MS Message Board.)

If someone has it would you please send it to me? I've looked high and low!!

Side note again! My hard drive died completely, had to buy a new computer. So, I've lost all email addresses along with everything else! Bummer...This is getting routine, please drop me a line. I've got lots of room to store addresses!!
Here's a little about Dr.Subramaniam Sriram
