René Part 19

March 17, 1998

My 6th treatment went as usual, it's getting real routine now, thank goodness!  Chris, the nurse administering the treatment is getting used to my veins, first time everytime!  Thank you Chris!

As I said earlier, the side-effect with women is our period stopping, that's fairly standard.  With men the side-effect is a lower sperm count, that's standard as well.

I'm going to include here the "Patient Information" from the brochure from Immunex on the heart muscle (everyone keeps bringing this up as an extreme caution)

... NOVATRON-can affect the heart muscle.  This may be more common in patients who have preexisting cardiovascular disease or who have had prior treatment with an anthracycline drug (e.g. Adriamycin, Cerubidine, ldamycin) or prior radiation therapy to the chest area....

I hope this clears up the "Fear" or "Uncertainty" with using this drug.  I was right from the start, (had to say that!!) if a person has a propensity towards a heart valve problem, then you have to be cautious.  Follow up (Germany 91) on over  4,000 people using this drug and finding only ... 3... with problems means (in my opening) it's a safe drug/treatment.  That's what the MUGA scan is for.

I have clearer information on life time usage of mitoxantrone. 1,000mg to 2,000mg is suggested, (not 5000mg) that's calculating the square meter inch of body surface.  The easiest way to explain this is if you imagine your body surface laying completing flat, they calculat that and your body weight.  They take that total number and determine the amount of mitoxantrone that one can use.

I've talked with Dr. Pomeroy, we've decided to start doing my treatments every 3 months at 20mg mitoxantrone, 1gm Solumedrol. We'll try it this way, if improvement continues.  If improvement stops, I'll go back to once a month and then start the maintenance protocol of once every 3 months later.

My exercising has slowed down a great deal, I don't have Allen anymore, except for errands and driving on occasion.  I'm in the process of trying to hire someone that can transfer me.  Exercising is important for my muscles and especially bones.  Standing is real important for my bones to get basically solid again.

Morale in my house is terrible, I'm working on ways to rectify that. Attitude (in my opinion) is externally important.  I don't need or want to be around negative, depressing, chip on their shoulder people or in this case person.  Hopefully that will be taken care of within the month!

I think most will agree that if you're feeling good (happy, peaceful) you move better, (even if it's just a finger) breathe better, think clearer and just feel down right lighter!!!

Basically losing Allen, negative live-in situation, (and your going to love this) my computer has to be worked on again, the computer business that I went to, knows nothing about DragonDictate and Windows 95 combined.(which they said they did know about!) All this has kicked me in the heart, (not to mention pocket book) just a little! Dampened my morale, which intern slows down progress. I am a strong person but this IS getting too me.Oh well, needed to complain. My problem....WHICH WILL IMPROVE.
My next treatment will be June 15th.  Hopefully I will have more improvements with this new schedule, I will definitely let you know. Morale issues as well.
