| René Part 16 February 5, 1998 Mitoxantrone dosage update... FINALLY... I've been waiting for verification of this information. Earlier I had written (from various studies) that the maximum lifetime dosage for mitoxantrone is 160mg... Apparently there's different opinions on this subject! One is 160mg, lifetime dosage. The other is 5,000mg lifetime dosage based on body mass.....quite a difference! Oncologists use Mitoxantrone in place of Adnamycin. Adnamycin's used commonly for cancer treatment, it's lifetime dosage is 550mg. Mitoxantrone accomplishes the same as Adnamycin over a longer period of time. I as well as others will have to use their own judgment on this.... Dr. Pomeroy and I have agreed on the usage of mitoxantrone up to 5,000mg. At that point we'll evaluate my situation. Another MSer (Bob Miller, < www.sure.net/~rmmiller >) is going with the 160mg approach, at 12mg mitoxantrone per treatment every 3 months, without Solumedrol. I'm using 20mg mitoxantrone once a month with 1gm Solumedrol. Studies show that both protocols work! I may change dosage in the future. Possibly drop to 12mg after 6 to 8 months. (If improvement continues) The MUGA scan plays an important part here... mitoxantrone can be damaging to the left ventricle of the heart, more so if you have a propensity to that (in my opinion). Studies show (Germany, 91) 3 people out of over 4,000 had problems! If improvement continues at 20mg once a month up to the 6 month, changing to12mg every 3 months should continue the progress. A maintenance program every 3 months has been mentioned in studies. My next treatment is February 16th... my last treatment was Jan. 20th. Everything went well, like clock work, 30 minutes.
