Ok please allow my 2 cents here.. I do not endorse any treatments ...I do endorse research, personal empowerment and learning everything about every alternative. I do not endorse blind faith in anyones opinions. We all want to beat this MonSter to a pulp there's no question there. Please really take a close look at all your alternative and make sure you are making an informed decision.

BVT... Bees ain't just for honey anymore...

(an announcement from the NMSS)

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has awarded a one-year pilot research grant to determine whether honey bee venom can alter the course of EAE (experimental allergic encephalomyelitis) in laboratory mice, and to study the biological effects the venom may have on immune system cells and nerve signals. This study, by Fred Lublin, MD (Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia), should provide crucial data needed if carefully designed clinical trials of honey bee venom in MS are to be conducted in the future.

Over several decades there have been unsubstantiated claims that venom from honey bees may benefit some people with MS. However, there has never been a controlled clinical trial to test these claims, nor any study to determine the biological effects of bee venom in MS or MS-like immune-system diseases.

Since there has recently been some movement toward efforts to begin early safety studies of honey bee venom (HBV) in people with MS, it is important to know the biological effects of HBV, if it has any. To this end, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recently awarded a $27,434 pilot research grant to Fred Lublin, MD (Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA) to test the ability of purified HBV to alter the course of MS-like disease in laboratory animals. The researchers will inject various doses of purified HBV into animals with experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) and compare the course of the disease to that in untreated animals.

If HBV has any clinical effect on EAE, or any effect on the appearance of disease lesions in the nervous system of the animals involved, Dr. Lublin will conduct subsequent studies to determine whether the venom is acting on immune system cells or on nerve signals -- a distinction that would indicate whether the venom is acting on the underlying immune abnormalities in EAE or on symptoms caused by abnormal nervous system conduction. The answer to this question will have important implications for the design of any future clinical trials of HBV in MS. HBV contains a mixture of a number of different chemicals, some of which can cause potentially severe allergic reactions in some people, while others may have effects on the immune system or nerve signals. It is not known whether the combined effect of these chemicals can alter the course of an autoimmune disease such as MS or EAE.

Dr. Lublin's project is the first scientific study of the effects of HBV on MS-like autoimmune disease.Information from this study will help determine whether there is any reason to consider HBV as a potential treatment for multiple sclerosis.
